By Max Musson:
Last April I wrote an article about a TV series, ‘Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter‘ (Our Mothers, our Fathers) which had just been broadcast in Germany, portraying the Second World War from a German perspective. The three part series has had a significant impact, having since been broadcast in several other European countries and rumour has it the series will also be broadcast here in the UK, later this year.
One of the main characters in the series is Greta, played by actress Katharina Schuettler, plays the part of a young German woman who has ambitions to emulate Marlene Dietrich and in the following scene, presented for your enjoyment, she sings a song, ‘Mein kleines Herz’ (My Little Heart), which is a love song from a girl to the soldier she loves:
Mein kleines Herz
Mein kleines Herz
schlägt nur für dich,
zählt die Stunden bis du wiederkehrst, dann umarmst du mich.
Mein kleines Herz
träumt schon vom Glück.
In der Heimat wartet es auf dich
und weiß du kehrst bald zurück.
Liebevoll schaust
du mich dann an,

My Little Heart
My little heart
beats just for you,
counts the hours till you return again, when you will embrace me.
My little heart
has been dreaming of luck.
At home it waits for you
and knows you will soon return.
Then lovingly
you’ll look at me,
our lips will meet softly, and I’ll know you are my man.
My little heart
does not ever rest.
It keeps me awake all night, and beats always, tuck, tuck.
My little heart
it yearns for you,
it knows the answer should you ask:
Yes, I belong to you.
Yes, I belong to you.

My German is basic, but I’ll watch this program. I mean, WW2 from a German perspective? I didn’t think we are allowed to hear both sides of the story in this liberal, free and open multiracial utopia that has been erected around us by our betters….

My expectation is that the programme will be dubbed in English for the British audience, or will at least have subtitles.
.
The series does not tell the story of WW2 from a Nazi perspective, that would indeed be too much to expect, but from a German perspective built around the experiences of five key characters, one of whom is Jewish. The most controversial aspect of the series appears to be that the story lines avoid any direct portrayal of concentration camps and omit any direct references to the treatment of Jews in them. This has been done I believe, to accurately portray the fact that most Germans were oblivious of the existence of the camps and what is alleged to have taken place in them. It has however caused consternation among Jewish groups for obvious reasons.

It might be from the perspective of four Germans and one Jew, but I can’t imagine one of those four German perspectives will be in any way pro-national socialism, bar that character being stereotypically portrayed as naive, a simpleton, possibly a nice person but nevertheless an idiot.

The first episode was incredibly powerful and moving, and the human dilemmas and weaknesses brought home how each of us must face the difficulties of life, and how we are all capable of betrayal. Nearly too hard to watch, but I think that we should.

Beautiful song. Love her expression at the 1:22 mark.
