Generation War – Our Mothers, Our Fathers

By Max Musson:

BBC 2 have begun to broadcast the highly acclaimed three part German World War Two series, ‘Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter’ (Our Mothers, Our Fathers). The first episode, ‘A Different Time’, was broadcast yesterday (26th May) and is still available to watch on BBC iPlayer for another six days. The second episode, ‘A Different War’ will be broadcast next Saturday evening at 9:30 pm.

This series depicts the effect that the Second World War conflict had on the lives of ordinary German citizens, and on the lives of five young Germans in particular.

‘Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter’ breaks new ground, in that it is a major German TV series, broadcast internationally to widespread acclaim, which depicts the plight of the German people sympathetically, not attempting to ‘whitewash’ the German war record, but merely presenting a balanced and objective view in which the German people are not unfairly demonised.

  1. Excellent recommendation Max. I just watched the first half. It shows how unprepared for the totality of the war ordinary Germans were.
I hope this show inspires our future warriors and allows them to better understand those who fell that we may survive to fight in the coming years.
