MSM Common Sense

I often take a look at the right wing American blogs which (naturally) give themselves much of the credit for the rise of populism in the United States. It is their belief that the rise of the internet has to a large extent enabled them to counter, and even overcome, the traditional mainstream media (the “MSM”), which is overwhelmingly left wing except in odd pockets where it is neocon and therefore nearly as bad.

I don’t know enough about the American media scene to know whether they are right or wrong, but they are surely right about the potential of the internet which, I suspect, may come to have as profound an effect on the future as the invention of printing had on the past. However that may be, on this side of the Atlantic it is surely the case that the old fashioned print media, shrunken though it is, continues to be influential. That is surely because there are a number of major publications which – although no friends to nationalism – are in tune with popular patriotism. It is difficult to imagine Brexit without the influence of such staunchly Eurosceptic publications as the Sun, Mail and Express; a point of view which gains credibility from the rumour, should it be true, that David Cameron (remember him?) tried to get Paul Dacre removed from the editorship of the Mail during the referendum campaign.

There are a number of journalists writing for these newspapers and others who express sentiments which we would certainly approve, but none more so than Leo , whose pieces for the Daily Express usually appear on Mondays and Thursdays. I reproduce below an extract from his article which appeared in the Express on the 23rd January, in which he writes of Trump and those who protest against him, under the headline “Stand up for your country, you’re a patriot not a bigot”. I would have liked to have written the same article but could not possibly have done it so well, and I doubt if there is one word with which we would disagree:-

“…there is nothing extreme about a government giving priority to the needs of its own people. That is just common sense. As Trump himself put it, ‘a nation exists to serve its citizens’. Only in the madhouse of the globalisers, where the very concept of patriotism has vanished, does such an idea provoke hostility.”

“What they fail to understand is that patriotism is an uplifting, noble virtue, an extension of the desire to protect the family and neighbourhood. Its antithesis is the dogma of globalization, which destroys mutual trust. Even some Left-wingers recognize this. Paul Mason, the radical commentator and Jeremy Corbyn supporter, put it well when he wrote that ‘free movement says to people with strong cultural traditions, a strong sense of place and community, that your past does not matter’.”

“Filled with self-loathing and smug cosmopolitanism, the elitists shrieking about Trump or Brexit have no understanding of the natural impulse to love one’s country. Just as they adore the EU because its goal is to destroy traditional nationhood, so they regard the Union Jack or the Star Spangled Banner with suspicion.”

“Far from feeling alarm at the accelerating Islamification of the West, they idiotically prattle about the joys of cultural enrichment. Instead of defending our civilization, they focus their energies on suppressing free speech, presenting any challenge to their  orthodoxy as ‘hate incidents’, while they also engage in the Orwellian task of rewriting history to suit their political agenda. And so, ridiculously, Britain is now held to be ‘a nation of immigrants’ when in reality we were, until the 1950s, one of the most homogenous societies on earth.”

“Apart from fuelling internal destruction, the other side of globalization is the belief in the right to interfere with other countries, either through colossal amounts of aid or through military action. Through this modern form of imperialism liberal interventionists have only succeeded in promoting instability, civil war, massive waste, corruption and chaos. The world has not been made a safer place through such blundering. That is why it is so ironic to see Trump derided as a danger to peace. He is just the opposite. ‘We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone,’ he said in his inaugural address.”

“Brexit and Trump represent a rebellion against the morally perverse madness that has caused such damage. These victories are a return to patriotic sanity. The real extremism lies with globalization.”

  1. Well said. many of us on this side of the pond have come to the conclusion that these pseudo-intellectuals are suffering from a variation of autism. Critical thinking seems to be beyond their capabilities. Note the perseveration thought processes they display when confronted with any opposition to their own inner narrative. (I remember in the movies what happens when a robot/computer comes to data that it cannot process and it says, “that does not compute–unable to process.”)

  2. The narrowness of the vote to leave the EU and later President Trump’s electoral victory in the US shows that Western society is fairly evenly divided between the so-called Liberal-left elites and those upholding traditional patriotic values. The Liberal-left or progressives are inherently intolerant of those holding different views or values and presume that they hold a monopoly on compassion and decency. They suffer from a contrived sense of guilt and conspire at every opportunity to undermine traditional Western society. The orchestrated display of outrage following Mr Trump’s electoral success, Inauguration and now following his partial travel ban affecting seven countries, clearly show the perverse values of these “Degenerates”.To them it is unacceptable that a country should take meaningful action to protect its own interests in terms of increased border security, immigration controls and deporting aliens. These “Degenerates” hold a perverse view of society and how a country should be run, and which are diametrically opposed to traditional values. Let 2017 inflict further defeats for the Globalists in France, Holland and Germany.

  3. Fully agree with you, but it does leave us with one conundrum – Fishy Nicky, the SNP and Scottish independence.
Personally, I would not like to see Scotland break away from the UK, but as I said at the time of their referendum – if that is their wish and majority decision then it must be honoured. Shame ‘Wee Crankie’ doesn’t understand the same democracy.
I have a number of Scottish friends, and indeed two of my old Army bosses were Jocks and great guys they were as well. I would have been sorry to see them in a totally ‘different’ country, and it is something they didn’t want either.
But since the Scots showed the sense to vote to stay in the United Kingdom that problem doesn’t arise, but they still must keep their national identity, as must the Welsh and to some extent the Northern Irish, many of whom can trace their linage back to Scotland, mingled with the Irish themselves – again great people. I really love being over there wherever I visit.
Having spent many years in German whilst in the Army, I have a number of German friends. Without exception they consider us extremely lucky to have been given this choice in the referendum and wish they could have the same. One of them has a daughter who is a journalist, who tells me that the German press is incredibly constrained now in what they can write and publish, and another has a son who is an MEP and very Eurosceptic apparently. He claims that the British press was about to get the same gagging treatment, which surprise, surprise, stems from the EU, to come into effect at the beginning of last July. Well, what a coincidence! The German people are all sick of losing their national identity and sick of embracing the whole world. If they are correct in what they tell me we are about to see the back of Mutti Merkel with a vengeance!
Personally I think (and hope) Marine Le Pen will triumph in France and gives them a referendum. Even if they decide to stay, she will personally give the EU a run for its money – which it hasn’t got.
Pre referendum I found several websites giving details of how close the EU was to bankruptcy. (anyone see them? I didn’t note the URL unfortunately) After we leave and no longer pay our daily ‘protection money’ they really will struggle. They could of course always ask Greece for a loan! I would give the EU another two years before it implodes. I do hope I live to see that!
