Treblinka – The Forensic Examination Fails

By Max Musson:

This weekend my attention was caught by adverts for a repeat showing of Channel 5’s documentary, ‘Treblinka: Inside Hitler’s Secret Death Camp’, part of their ‘Genius and Genocide’, series featuring no less than six, 90 minute documentaries trawling once more over the alleged ‘facts’ and ‘diabolical nature’ of the Nazi Third Reich.

Publicity material for the documentary claimed that it would be, “… following a team of British archaeologists who have been granted unprecedented access to investigate and excavate Hitler’s most notorious death camp.”

It was declared that forensic archaeologist, Dr Caroline Sturdy Colls and her team, would, “carry out the first ever comprehensive forensic investigation of Treblinka”, and the publicity blurb went on, “Between 1942 and 1943, the Nazis murdered more than 800,000 people at Treblinka in north east Poland, brutally exploiting many more as slave labour. Today no visible traces of those atrocities remain. The Nazis dismantled the camp in 1943 in an attempt to conceal what had happened there.”

“This film follows Caroline and the team as they get to work at Treblinka, uncovering the location and remains of the camp and detailing its key structures, including the processing rooms, gas chambers and burial pits. Drawing on testimony from one of the last survivors of the camp and newly-discovered documentary sources, the programme provides a new, visceral and compelling narrative of one of the darkest chapters in human history.”

While I don’t usually concern myself with the pro’s and con’s of the Holocaust, this programme interested me for two reasons:

Firstly, because it rather admitted up front that hitherto, no physical evidence has been established as proof of the claimed exterminations of large numbers people at Treblinka during World War II; and

Secondly, because the programme claimed to comprehensively provide that missing proof.

For someone such as I, who is aware of the controversies that exist and the way in which the propagation of the traditional Holocaust narrative has been used to denigrate nationalists, I was interested that someone apparently well qualified in forensic investigation, had at last conducted a ‘comprehensive’ examination of the two sites forming the Treblinka concentration camp complex. Surely we would now get to the truth, one way or the other!

In the programme, Caroline Sturdy Colls introduces herself as a forensic archaeologist, stating, “I work with police forces investigating murder cases and cases of missing individuals who may be buried” and this creates the expectation that the investigation will be dispassionate and unbiased, because for someone such as Dr Sturdy Colls, the uncovering of grisly human remains must be an almost routine experience and her police work must have instilled in her the discipline to avoid jumping to conclusions prior to an examination of the evidence found.

In this respect however, we are quickly disappointed as Sturdy Colls declared her desire to find the evidence needed to fit a predetermined outcome.

As the narrator of the documentary explains, of the two sites forming the Treblinka complex, Treblinka 1 has traditionally been regarded simply as a slave labour camp, while Treblinka 2 is believed to have been the extermination camp, he states that Caroline has long believed that Treblinka 1 was also a place, “of large scale systematic murder”.

Caroline is then shown stating, “Just because Treblinka 1 was smaller and just because Treblinka 1 wasn’t branded as an extermination camp, that doesn’t make the crimes that happened there any better.

“It’s the part of the site that gets completely forgotten because everybody talks about the history of the death camp, and what I really want to show with my work is that actually, Treblinka was one large landscape that comprised of the death camp and the labour camp, and all these places, whatever form it took, the executions were all equally a brutal and equally horrific as each other.”

The investigation begins with aerial photography with special imaging that enables an image of the land surface to be generated with all trees and vegetation removed. The resultant image showed a number of depressions in an area ten minutes walk south of Treblinka 1 and Caroline decided to dig two exploratory ‘trenches’ at a couple of these sites.

During the digging the remains of an old leather shoe are found and Caroline immediately declared, “This is the shoe of someone who was buried in a mass grave”, despite the fact that a shoe could have been discarded in any number of ways and for any number of reasons.

Then a number of bone fragments were unearthed, some of which, although not all were obviously human, the most significant of which appeared to be an adult arm bone and the jaw-bone of a child, and immediately Caroline is heard exclaiming, “Seeing all this, I get so angry, its not just bones, it’s a person!

“What could they have possibly done to make the Nazis want to treat them this way?”

Without stopping to think that during World War II the front line would have passed across this area at least three times and that the people to whom those bone fragments belonged might have been killed by either side, Caroline assumed that the bones must have been those of concentration camp inmates murdered by the Nazis.

With just a small number of bone fragments discovered from possibly just two individuals, Caroline declared, “We have enough to prove that this is a mass grave!”

Furthermore, just to emphasise the ‘overwhelmingly’ distressing nature of these findings, we were treated to the sight of Caroline sobbing and being comforted by a male member of her team. It would seem that finding these few bone fragments was too much even for an experienced forensic archeologist – even one who one would suppose would have been hardened by all of the grisly police work she must have undertaken over the years.

It apparently did not cross Caroline’s mind that the bones may have resulted from a common murder, or from the murder of Polish people oppressed by the Communists after the war. No, she was certain they were the bones of people murdered by the Nazis, and she declared, “This whole landscape is part of Treblinka’s killing machine essentially, this is the area where Nazis came to hide their crimes that they perpetrated.”

The investigation then shifted further north to the site of Treblinka 2, the alleged extermination camp in which between 800,000 and 900,000 people are claimed to have died, despite the narrator of the programme admitting that, “The remains of the 900,000 people who died have never been found.”

Today there is a memorial covering most of the site of Treblinka 2, consisting of a large stone structure bearing the inscription, “Never again!” in several languages, and an assemblage of 17,000 smaller, roughly hewn standing stones set in concrete.

There is also an imitation ‘grill pit’, an imitation of one of the long pits that the Nazis are alleged to have used to burn the large number of corpses that had accumulated. It is a long rectangular pit filled with basalt, which is meant to symbolize the charred wood used to burn the bodies.

Caroline and her team stopped by the side of it and reaching down to examine the sandy bank to the pit Caroline picked up some tiny fragments barely millimeters across and declared, “These are fragments of human bone!”

There was obviously no time to waste on DNA analysis, Caroline could apparently tell for certain, just by rubbing it between her fingers.

Caroline then set about digging two ‘trenches’, which were more like 1.5 metre square holes, in the lawns set between the standing stones and after a couple of days digging the team found just a few fragments of hair combs and dentures and cheap jewelry in one hole and in the other, several pieces from terra cotta ceramic tiles.

The tiles each had a smooth glazed surface and on the other side a dimpled surface bearing the manufactures mark, which consisted of a capital ‘D’ next to a circle containing a six pointed star, which coincidentally looked rather like a Star of David.

Caroline immediately decided that these were tiles from the floor of a gas chamber and that they featured the Star of David motif in order to lure the Jews into a false sense of security.

“What immediately springs to mind when I see this”, she declared, “is that witnesses who were allowed in the gas chamber area, talked about the Star of David actually being on the outside of the gas chamber buildings to build up that illusion that people were going to somewhere that was safe.”

It didn’t occur to her to consider that the dimpled side of the tiles was almost certainly designed to form a surface for tile cement to bind to and that only the glazed side of the tiles would have been visible in whatever building they were used to form the floor surface.

It also didn’t occur to Caroline that Pavel Leleko, one of the survivors of the concentration camp, had earlier in the programme described how camp guards and their Ukrainian helpers would forcefully herd the Jews, naked and hysterical, into the gas chambers by hitting them with clubs and whips, and it would be doubtful therefore that the existence of a Star of David emblem on the external wall of the gas chamber would do much to alleviate their panic, let alone tiny Star of David motifs on the floor tiles inside.

As Caroline and her team dug deeper in the hope of finding more substantial and convincing evidence of a gas chamber, they realized that there was a one metre deep layer of quarried sand covering the site – sand containing fossilised sharks teeth.

Again Caroline jumped to the conclusion that the quarried sand had been put there by the Nazis in an attempt to cover up their misdeeds, ignoring completely the fact that after Treblinka was closed and the Germans demolished the concentration camp buildings, a farm complex was built on the site, until that too was demolished after the war to make way for the building of the memorial that exists there now.

It did not occur to Caroline consider whether the sand layer could have been put there by Polish workers who would have wanted to level the site for the memorial and who might have used sand to mix the concrete into which 17,000 standing stones are set. Instead, her team dug down until they had located some larger stones beneath the sand and then declared that they had identified the location of a gas chamber!

During the programme we were informed that the gas chambers at Treblinka were capable of killing as many as 5,000 people in twenty minutes, yet as the programme concluded, Caroline stated, “For the men within eight to ten minutes of arrival in Treblinka they would be dead and they would be killed in the gas chambers, and for the women, it was more like 15 minutes, because of the fact that they had to have their heads shaved before they actually took that walk into the gas chamber themselves”.

Neither Caroline nor the programme makers realised the contradictions in their statements, nor how ludicrously premature their assumptions were given that this was supposed to be a scientific investigation into Treblinka by a doctor of forensic archeology experienced in police work.

The publicity material for this programme stated “This film follows Caroline and the team as they get to work at Treblinka, uncovering the location and remains of the camp and detailing its key structures, including the processing rooms, gas chambers and burial pits. Drawing on testimony from one of the last survivors of the camp and newly-discovered documentary sources, the programme provides a new, visceral and compelling narrative of one of the darkest chapters in human history.”

In fact, all that was achieved is that they discovered a number of bone fragments in circumstances which don’t provide any clues as to who they belonged to nor how they came to be buried in the woods c. 300 yards from Treblinka 1, and in Treblinka 2, Caroline’s team merely discovered a few fragments of personal artifacts, half a dozen broken floor tiles and some large stones.

If this was going to be an investigation that would silence the tongues of so called ‘Holocaust deniers’, Caroline Sturdy Colls has fallen a long way short of the mark, and I have a feeling it will probably have the opposite effect and will instead re-ignite the debate. Certainly if the comments left by those who have viewed websites promoting the programme are anything to go by.

  1. A few fragments of bone, even an arm bone is not proof of a mass grave. This dig sounds like an amateur shambolic nonsense. She’s obviously not biased in any way being a member of the Scientific Advisory Council for Concentration Camps in The Netherlands and also having a number of forthcoming publications in the field of Holocaust Archaeology.
You could dig up just about anywhere in Europe as there’s been many wars and disease over the years and the chances are you will find some bones, even in Britain they are forever digging up old bones doesn’t mean a holocaust occurred.
    Keep digging!!

  2. The bones were most likely from some of the Polish sportsmen that disappeared and assumed murdered at the beginning of WW2. Murdered for standing up to the communists. From what I understand this was quite a common occurrence. That is being dragged off the street or out of home in the middle of the night and ending up dead in the forest.
At Katyn Forest Massacre thousands of Poles were shot by communists and the true story is only just being made public.

  3. I admit I haven’t researched the Holocaust, so i can’t say if it did or didn’t happen. All I know is this: in 1948 they claimed that 4 million Jews died there and in 1998 they admitted that only 1.5 million Jews dies there. That means, even if everything else is true, 6 million Jews didn’t die in the Holocaust (for want of a better word); it was — at most — 3.5 million.

Now, I could be wrong here but I read once that 2 million German POWs died in WW2. They must have died in horrible circumstances, but they haven’t had any films made out of their suffering.

Now, if there was a mass murder campaign against the Jews I want to see evidence from objective scientists and then I will believe it. Even then, I will still have to say that the Holocaust (for want of a better word) wasn’t the worst mass murder of the 20th century!

I’m sorry if this offends people, but Jews were disproportionately involved in perpetrating the Bolshevik Revolution, which lead to 30 million Russians dying, many in the most brutal ways possible. Perhaps many Jews did die in the Holocaust (although I still have to see some concrete evidence), but I reckon Jewish organisations should temper their incessant bleating about the Holocaust in recognition of the shameful part played by their many of their co-religionists in Russia. It was wicked.

  4. Good analysis, Max.

I think it’s fair to say that propaganda efforts such as this programme demonstrate that their makers don’t believe the claims they’re making.

    1. As long as the viewers buy it is the important bit but hopefully people are getting more wise to this sort of manipulation.
I remember going back to watch bits of the “World at War” & thinking about how certain things have been “enhanced” with added soundtrack or maybe footage incorrectly shown as one thing when it was something else.

  5. “Without stopping to think that during World War II the front line would have passed across this area at least twice and that the people to whom those bone fragments belonged might have been killed by either side, Caroline assumed that the bones must have been those of concentration camp inmates murdered by the Nazis.”

At least three times, lest we forget (like all of the other Western “Allies” did) the Soviet invasion of Poland on September 17, 1939.

It would be interesting to know how much Caroline Sturdy Colls and other members of her team get paid for going through with this charade.

    1. Allegedly paid in diamonds and gold rings Michael. In which case it must have been painful swallowing her earnings every day and having to retrieve them after going to the lav.

  7. I watched that programme and noticed all the points you raise. I laughed but with anger at how gullible they assume their viewers to be. Every new revelation was contradicted by something said or seen earlier or later in the ‘show’.
One of the most ludicrous bits was when the two small different pieces of tile you mention both laying perfectly horizontal were pulled from corners from the tiny hole they dug in a massive field. I strongly suspect they may have been deliberately planted but in such an amateurish fashion it beggared belief.
If that is the best the Holocaust propogandists can come up with after 68 years then their story is in real trouble.

  8. I must admit I didn’t stay the course. I switched over when that damn silly woman kept emoting instead of behaving with proper scientific detachment.

  9. The mere fact that Channel 5 aired a series of programmes, and that the ‘Yesterday’ channel airs Holocaust propaganda 24/7, is enough to have the opposite effect. People are sick of these lies now and in the last few years I’ve noticed a steady growth in mistrust of the official narrative. Essentially, the mainstream media and academia ‘hath protested too much’ – they’ve gone overboard with their ‘big lie’ and have thus galvanised the increasing number of people who have doubts.

  10. I haven’t yet watched it but it does sound like a case of trying to stretch facts to fit a particular story.
I think when the police did this, it was called a “stitch up” or a “frame up”!
Often it would be proven to be a lie.

  11. I saw a documentary a few years ago using the same techniques but instead of Treblinka they were excavating the battlefield of Culloden outside Inverness in Scotland. The battle occurred in 1746 (200 years before the ‘Holocaust’) and the deaths amounted to a couple of thousand not the 900,000 at Treblinka.

However the artifacts and the human bones found were about 8 times those found during this excavation at Treblinka. While I don’t believe the official story of the Holocaust I thought that they might come up with something better than they did. If the best they can do is footage of the Warsaw Ghetto, a few bits of pottery, dodgy bone fragments and hearsay from survivors then this story is going to collapse under the weight of its own lies.

  12. As I recall at the end of the programme it stated that a Ukrainian guard at the camp told Soviet interrogators in 1945 that the petrol fumes (a crude way of killing anyone) from an ‘extermination’ buillding were over powering or something similar. No mention of gas, e.g. Zyklon B.

  14. According to Fred Leuchter ( an expert in the building of crematoria ) in a modern purpose built crem it takes half an hour to totally incinerate a body and this still does not completely get rid of the pelvis. It also takes 50kg of coke per body.

That’s 6 million x 50kg = 300,000,000kg. where was this stored. Ariel photos of the camps taken by the Allies didn’t show these mountains of coke. Where are the tons of ash buried ? What about the six million pelvises.

6,000,000 x 30 minutes = 125,000 days = 342 years. Even if they doubled up on cremations and used multi crematoria the figures just don’t add up.

    1. These are the kind of logistical conundrums that cause people to doubt the traditional Holocaust narrative and they illustrate the danger for historians and politicians etc., in nailing one’s colours to astoundingly high figures like ‘six million’. Establishment historians and politicians are now left desperately trying to substantiate that figure or risk losing their credibility. This then results in oppressive legislation designed to deter discussion and critical examination of the ‘facts’, and in programmes like the one featured in my article which fall well short of being convincing.
      .
Clearly, large numbers of Jews suffered at the hands of the Nazis, just as Germans suffered at the hands of the Allies after the war and large numbers of Jews died, just as large numbers of Germans and others died in ghastly circumstances during and in the aftermath of the war. War is after all a ghastly business in which two or more factions employ deadly force with the aim of terrorising their opponents into submission, or of killing them if they won’t surrender.
      .
Innocent people get killed on all sides in a war and such deaths are always to be deplored. If one wishes to emerge from a conflict with clean hands, one must strive to avoid genocidal policies wherever and whenever possible, and if one wishes ones accusations of other’s war crimes to be believed, one must avoid sensationalism and hyperbole in what one reports and make sure that one’s claims are realistic from a logistical standpoint before making wild accusations.
      .
Sadly, these principles were not employed by the victors at the end of World War II, and we now have an unfortunate situation in which ‘Emperors’ struggle ever-more desperately to convince an increasingly sceptical public, that they do have clothes.

      1. Also the figures, above, are based on the use of a modern crematorium. according to Fred Leuchter the actual time to cremate one body in the type, allegedly, used by the Germans would be more like an hour per person which makes the claims seem even more outrageous.

What are we to make of the following description which follows on from that already supplied by Franks in which Miss Caroline Sturdy Colls expounds her raison d’etre’?

“I have developed a non-invasive methodology which allows the scientific, ethical and religious aspects associated with studies of this period to be upheld.”

Are we to assume that by this she means a thorough scientific investigation is conditional upon it upholding the claims made by Germany’s enemies?

  16. Many thanks for your review. I was tempted to watch myself but the title sums up how unbiased it was going to be.
Assuming the Nazis had discovered some way of reducing the time for cremation and reduction of remains what then happened to the powder? A simple test of the earth would show a high concentration of calcium. Given that 800.000 died there the excavation should have been finding masses of bones not the odd one or two wherever they dug their trench.

  17. Isn’t it odd how the history of WW2 is now entirely dominated by the “holocaust”? All the great events of that war; the stunning German advances, the war in the air, the U-Boat campaigns, Tobruk and Singapore, Alamein and Stalingrad – all (and so much more) have faded into the background and are beginning to vanish from memory, but the “holocaust” shines ever more brightly.

This is the reverse of how it was a few decades ago – then most people had a personal memory of the war years and the sufferings of the Jews were almost incidental, just another horror among many. Even the old word “holocaust” was not applied to what was more usually called “the Final Solution” or just “the extermination of the Jews”, now it has been entirely appropriated for the Jewish events and given a capital “H” to emphasise its singularity.

    How has this come about?

  18. Hi Max,

‘we now have an unfortunate situation in which ‘Emperors’ struggle ever-more desperately to convince an increasingly sceptical public, that they do have clothes’

I would hazard that not only is the holocaust taken for granted but that it is actually the undisputed founding myth of secular humanism.
‘Never again’….. yada yada ( is that yiddish?)

  19. Surely, but surely after all this time no-one really believes these figures. Why not 60 million its just as believable. Will it ever cease? I doubt it.

Two of these type of programmes are made every year. There is a name for it..

    1. Yes, Miss Brigit, I call it ‘atrocity pornography’. It is not pornographic in the sexual sense, although there are allusions to this in some of the more lurid accounts of the Holocaust, but it is pornography in the sense that it is material of a gratuitously explicit nature, intended to play upon the viewers basest instincts and their propensity to voyeurism, and to induce a state of depravity. Whereas the individual addicted to sexual pornography is gratified by being permitted to read about and view others involved in acts of increasingly depraved sexual indulgence, the individual addicted to atrocity pornography is gratified by being permitted to read about and view others involved in acts of increasingly depraved homicidal indulgence.
      .
There is a common link between these two forms of pornography in that they both inevitably involve elements of sadomasochism and unsurprisingly, there was during the 1950s through to the 1960s, a genre of pornography produced and largely consumed in Israel, which became known as ‘Stalag’ fiction, which depicted Jews and others being subjected to bizarre forms of highly sexualised and sadomasochistic torture and execution. Apparently, there was nothing more sexually arousing for the predominantly Jewish consumers of this pornography than to be castrated during bizarre medical experiments and then flung into gas chambers by tall blond and voluptuous, but pitilessly sadistic Nazi females, wearing lashings of red lipstick, tight SS tunics and long leather jack boots.

  20. If you have any doubt that the alleged Treblinka holocaust is a fraudulent cognitive illusion (of which Colls is a part), then please visit The National Association of Forensic Historians website at:

    https://nafcash.com/

“It is alleged in orthodox historiography that, during WW II – hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of people were buried in “huge mass graves” at the four very small, precisely known locations of – Belzec, Chelmno, Sobibor and Treblinka. (Yad Vashem alleges that over two million people died at these four sites.) However, despite all the deceptive allegations / insinuations to the contrary, the plain and simple truth is; the largest extant so-called “huge mass grave” ever located / proven to exist at these four sites – in which actual, verified human remains have literally / truly been physically unearthed / tangibly located by archaeologists / forensic investigators – by means of bona fide, verifiably honest and conclusively documented archaeology / forensic science – contains the remains of only six people – SIX!”

  21. I agree with all of Max’s comments. I find Sturdy Colls an insult to forensic archaeologists. Jumping to conclusions is her finest quality, and I hope that she doesn’t bring this talent to her police work. She should be arrested for giving false evidence. Apart from this video what kept her occupied for the six year investigation?
She should watch Time Team and find out how to carry out a dig.

  22. Nice !

The “Star of David” ( sic ) being on the cement side so that you could not see it when it was laid was a classic – this woman is a fraud – If I ever get murdered , I hope she is not on the forensic team.

  23. As a former Crime Scene Examiner for well over a decade, I was appalled at this purile docu-soap presented as sound science. Your interpretation is excellent and a must read for all free minded seekers of truth.

  24. I’ve come late to this story but I agreed with every point Max Musson made. I am also puzzled as to why visiting Jewish people would wish to spread the ashes of their deceased relatives at a place of such alleged horror.

Also, am I right in thinking there are no known photographs of Treblinka during the Nazi period as there are of most of the other camps?
