Nikos Michaloliakos Jailed

By Max Musson:

In an Athens court early yesterday morning, after overnight testimony that lasted for more than six hours, Nikos Michaloliakos the leader of Greek nationalist party Golden Dawn, was jailed pending trial on charges of running a criminal organisation.

This follows the wave of arrests carried out by the Greek government last Saturday, which saw Mr Michaloliakos and five other Golden Dawn MPs among twenty people arrested, ostensibly following the fatal stabbing of singer Pavlos Fyssas, but amid speculation that charges of wider organized criminality would be brought.

In fact the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece issued a press release as early as 8th May 2012, declaring, “the election of the followers of Fascism and Nazism in the Greek Parliament on May 6, was a strong hit against Greek Democracy”, and they called upon all democratic forces of the Greek Parliament to join forces in order to “preserve [their] dignity” and “safeguard the principles of freedom, democracy and humanism”.

The interesting aspect of this declaration is that Greece’s Jews felt the challenge from Golden Dawn to be so strong that they expected their country’s other political parties to be prepared to set aside their political differences and collude in engineering the downfall of the nationalist party.

Then again on Monday, 23 September 2013 following the stabbing of Fyssas, they issued another similarly worded declaration, stating, “Our dignity, our freedom, our democracy, our humanism were literally violated. The punishment of the perpetrators is not enough.”

So the punishment of George Roupakias, the man who is believed to have stabbed Fyssas, “is not enough”, the Greek Jewish community expect the Greek government to do more and evidently take action even against members and officers of Golden Dawn who had nothing to do with Fyssas’ killing.

The declaration continued, We urge the Prime Minister, as well as all the leaders of the democratic parties to work together in the struggle against the “morphemes” of Nazism and Fascism in Greece, to cooperate for the voting of a strong and effective legislation that will combat racism, intolerance and anti-Semitism and undertake all necessary steps in order to ban from contesting elections individuals and / or organizations that profess Nazi methods and have committed crimes against Democracy and society. All parties have to turn their promises into legislative action and finally stop those who seek the return of the darkest period of our history.”

It is therefore clearly revealed that the action taken against Golden Dawn was not primarily in response to the stabbing of Fyssas, but intended to lead to the banning of that party and similar racial nationalist parties on political grounds, i.e. based upon their racial beliefs and their opposition to Jewish influence in Greece.

Readers should notice that the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece again called upon “all parties”, asking them to turn their “promises” into “legislative action” aimed at “stopping those” who are racially aware and opposed to Jewish influence in Greek politics. One wonders what these ‘promises’ were precisely and what they were made in exchange for?

Furthermore, as if to underline the primarily political nature of the action taken against Golden Dawn, Greece’s Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, speaking to the American Jewish Committee (AJC) in New York this week, said he would do “whatever it takes” to eradicate Golden Dawn from his parliament.

Mr Samaras said Greek citizens “will realise that they should not follow the party that has such extreme ideological positions and ideas”.

He added: “There is no room for the neo-Nazis in any party of the democratic world, and there is no tolerance for the neo-Nazis, or for any kind of extremism, undermining democratic institutions.”

Samaras would not have made such a statement if he was motivated simply by concern over illegal or criminal acts committed by certain members of Golden Dawn, his desire to do “whatever it takes” to eradicate political parties that he regards as ‘Nazi’ and which he believes exhibit ‘extremism’, belies his real motives and their undemocratic and political nature.

The Greek government have embarked down a very dangerous road, for when constitutional political dissent is prohibited, those who dissent have no recourse, but to unconstitutional methods.

I note from the link the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece announcement – Social services for Nazi victims have been supported by a grant from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.

Just whose money or assets have organised Jewry tapped into this time?

    1. The Jewish organisations concerned would of course argue Thomas, that the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany has acquired redress from the German people for the suffering they endured during World War II, and that this money is being legitimately applied in providing for the needs of Jewish communities in Greece at this time.
      .
What they seem to overlook, is that the Greek people also suffered grievously during the war. While Greek Christians have received material assistance in overcoming the privations of the war, so have Greek Jews, yet Greek Jews clearly feel that their suffering should be doubly compensated, with additional funds from a compensation fund set up exclusively for them.
      .
Jews will argue that their suffering was greater than the suffering of ordinary Greeks. Greeks will have been killed as combatants and as civilian collateral casualties the Jews will argue, while Jews also suffered and died in the concentration camps. However, why should death in battle be regarded as less tragic than death in a concentration camp? Furthermore, those who survived the war obviously did not die in any of these tragic circumstances, so why should a Jew who survived the ravages of the war be compensated to a greater extent than a Christian?
      .
While ordinary Greeks continue to suffer under the impact of the current economic crisis, Greek Jews will be better off than their Christian compatriots, yet the Jews will still wonder why other people resent such a double standard.

  2. And only this morning it is reported on Russia Today that the Samaras regime can find money to build a mosque for moslems in Athens while many Greeks search through rubbish bins for food.

The ‘chutzpah’ of Jewish organisations in calling for the Golden Dawn to be banned in the interests of democracy is mind numbing.

To “do whatever it takes” implies ‘extreme’ measures will be taken if necessary, possibly unlawfull and or criminal. Therefor how can any ‘evidence’ that the prosecution present be taken as untainted and therefor trusted.
It sounds to me like a veiled threat and certainly not in the spirit of democracy.

What I find most interesting in this whole arrest saga is the fact that each and every arresting officer of the half dozen or so Golden Dawn leaders has worn a ski mask or other coverage to hide his face.
    .
Are these actually Greek police officers, perhaps terrified of retribution? Or are they paramilitaries from Eurogendfor[1]?
    .
    .
[1] The paramilitary wing of the E.U. consisting of members from all E.U. nations. A perfect weapon in negating the national police’s possible sense of loyalty to their people. (Worried that the Greek police might not be so heavy handed with Golden Dawn? Why, simply send in masked Eurogendfor members from Macedonia and hey presto! –problem solved.

  6. They (TPTB) are terrified because if they fail, Golden Dawn will probably be pretty severe in their dealings with them, the gloves have come off.

  7. ” Golden Dawn will probably be pretty severe in their dealings with them, the gloves have come off.”

I would like to see that.

    1. We’re certainly going to see something!
If they think they can keep a lid on thing by jailing them, I think they are in for a disappointment.

  8. With the latest tragedy, it is being used to call for more legal immigration into Europe of economic migrants but it’s a demand that would never be satisfied & we will collapse under the weight of it.
I watched “Make me a German” & in that there was brief moment of dissent when a German expressed a dislike of so many Turks being in Nuremburg but he didn’t elaborate on it or it was cut & the programme pretty much avoided showing any foreigners apart from Justin Rowlett & his family.

    1. We in the West are blamed for this tragedy rather than the countries responsible being told to put their own houses in order.
