Feeding the Nation

By Max Musson:

When the subject of national self-determination is discussed and nationalists assert our belief in an independent Britain, free from domination by the EU and other international and globalist forces, an argument is always used stating categorically that we as a nation are incapable of feeding ourselves and therefore must submit to supra-national domination or else be starved into submission.

The statistic always quoted is that we only produce approximately 70% of our national food needs and the need to import the other 30% makes us dependent upon the goodwill of the international community. However in 1895, in Chapter IV of his book ‘Merrie England’, the influential patriotic socialist politician and writer Robert Blatchford quoted Lord Lauderdale at that time, stating that 500 acres of good farmland is capable of feeding 2,000 people, i.e. four people per acre, and that with 50,000,000 acres of such land, the British Isles (including all of Ireland) could feed 200 million people.

Today, Britain no longer encompasses all of Ireland, but within the border of the UK we have 15.3 million acres of arable land alone, enough in Lord Lauderdale’s estimation to feed 61 million people on a diet of cereals, fruit and vegetables. This does not take into account the food produced by the dairy industry, the meat and livestock industry, nor the fisheries industry and this realisation alone blows this whole issue wide open.

It may be a fact that only 70% of our current food requirement here in Britain comes from British farms and that we import the remaining 30%, but the above statistics strongly suggest that this state of affairs is the product of commercial practice rather than physical necessity, and we must obviously export much of our food production to other countries simply in order to import exotic foodstuffs that are a matter of culinary choice rather than necessity.

Let us examine this matter in a little greater detail:

Within the UK we have 18.3 million hectares (45.2 million acres) of farmland, composed of 6.2 million hectares of arable land, 10.9 million hectares of pastureland and 1.2 million hectares of rough grazing, suitable only for sheep.

For the purposes of this article, I will initially concentrate solely on the production of staple foodstuffs such as cereals and potatoes. I will ignore the production of oil seed rape, much of which is used for bio-fuel, fruit, legumes, sugar beet and other horticultural produce, meat, dairy, poultry and fish produce. The result of my deliberations should therefore not only carry with us most nationalists, but also any vegetarians or vegans who may read this article.

Of the 6.2 million hectares available for arable farming; 3.1 million hectares is devoted to cereal production; 233,000 hectares to peas and beans; 149,000 hectares to potatoes; and 116,000 hectares to sugar beet. Of the remaining 2.6 million hectares, 1.44 million hectares is used for oil seed rape production and the remainder for horticulture and fruit orchards and temporary pasture under crop rotation systems.

The average yield for cereal crops in the UK is 6,800 kilograms per hectare and this means that 3.1 million hectares will produce slightly over 21 million metric tonnes of cereal. Of this total 66% is currently used for animal feedstuffs, but let us suppose that it could all be made available to feed humans

After milling, 21 million tonnes of wheat grain translates into 17.2 million tonnes of wholemeal flour, and with a calorific value of 3,390 calories per kilogram of wholemeal flour, this has a total calorific value of 58.3 trillion calories, enough to meet the total calorific needs of 63.9 million people if it were possible to live healthily on flour alone.

The average yield for potatoes, is 40 tonnes per hectare and this means that 233,000 hectares will produce 5,960,000 metric tonnes of potatoes, and with a calorific value of 770 calories per kilogram, this has a total calorific value of 4.6 trillion calories, enough to meet the total calorific needs of 5 million people if it were possible to live healthily on potatoes alone.

As we can see from above, by simply maximising the use for human consumption of just the flour and potato produce of the UK alone, it would be possible to feed almost 69 million people. If we take into consideration, the meat and dairy produce of the UK, the production of eggs, fish, legumes, fruit etc. i.e. all of the foodstuffs needed to provide a balanced diet and the full range of nutritional needs, it is clear that we could easily provide a healthy balanced diet for the entire population of the UK from within our own borders.

It is a scurrilous myth therefore, this allegation that we British are unable to feed ourselves, and a myth that has been promulgated by those who desire global government and the subjugation of all peoples to a one world tyranny. A myth promulgated by those who seek to convince us that our well-being is dependent upon the goodwill of the EU and other globalist and supra-national entities. A myth that is easily exposed as untrue.

We nationalists can therefore look forward to a time when our people will have freedom and self-determination without fearing for the food security of our nation. We British were able to feed ourselves in the past and with the will and the right leadership we can do it again.

  1. What great news! Yet again, the EU are lying about our capacity to ”survive” as a nation. Another thing must be added: there is the technology available today to grow all sorts of fruits, vegetables and cereals in oxygenated, stainless-steel tower blocks.

This would reduce the need for land. That land could then be used as a nature reserve where leftists, Cultural Marxist, and exploitative capitalists could repay the nation by doing huge amounts of unpaid work!

  2. The impression given, unsurprisingly by the media is that we can’t do without imports, that we need to be in the EU etc to survive but I think we could be more self sufficient & once the unwanted leave, we can return the useless buildings back into farmland & woods.
Of course we will trade with others for some things but on an equal fair basis.

There are also the allotments, gardens and urban farms that may not be factored into the available land figures . Whilst they alone could not feed our nation , they could contribute a fair seasonal harvest for a small family.
Innovative farming techniques are also left out of the argument. Take Seaweed for example. Seaweed is becoming an ever increasing choice for many people. As yet there are no seaweed farms , I think I am correct in saying.
As you mentioned Max , your calculations of our ability to feed our nation are based , without taking into account the fisheries and livestock. Obviously livestock would need to be fed from the harvest of grains , meaning that there would be less available for human consumption. This is not the case for fish though. One thing we have is an abundance of territorial waters. Our fishing industry was decimated by the EEC , the forerunner to the EU. With some encouragement and investment I see no reason why Britain could not once again boast a healthy fishing industry.
Even if however , these calculations proved that the EU apparatchiks were accurate in their statements , that Britain could not feed itself , that is not reason enough for the EU to shape the future of Europe and the European people through the destruction of our homelands our independant nations and us as a people of those various European nations.
I see no reason why , as Nationalists , there could not be co-operation and trade between our European Brothers in the future Europe of Nations . Infact there are strong arguments to support such endeavours.

  4. Another question that needs asking, is whether we should devote such land to agriculture, to feed a mass of people disconnected to the earth, or whether we reseed that land as forest and encourage native species back to the land, tear down the civilisation that supports millions of weaklings and return to a way of life that feeds the souls of those who live here?

I have some sympathy for this point of view. The white British element in the population of the UK is about 52,000,000 almost exactly the same as it was in 1951. The post war baby boom which petered out by about 1970 would have added several million more to that number had it not been for emigration, mainly to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. Those were the days when we thought (rightly) that we should be populating the Dominions in order to help to keep them British while relieving overcrowding at home.

Having exported several million Brits to relieve overcrowding at home we then allowed the immigration of a far greater number of fast breeders from the third world! Clever or what? So our present population is not 52,000,000 but 64,000,000 and forecast to increase to 74,000,000 by 2037, the increase being entirely of immigrant stock. In fact the position is much worse than that because by 2037 most of the baby boomers will be dead having failed to adequately reproduce themselves. If there had been no immigration post 1945 our population would still be 52,000,000 but on the verge of beginning a steep decline to under 40,000,000, but of course there has been immigration and that 40,000,000 will be the White British element of the population in 2037 (and that does not take into account losses due to miscegenation).

Yes, let’s try to feed ourselves but only once we have unloaded all the foreigners and only if we can do it without going back to the intensive farming methods of the 1940/1980 period which did such damage to the countryside.

      1. I read a comment on the Daily Mail website that said a “secret” report by Tesco to the government declared that the actual population of UK was now 80,000,000

        1. Yes, I heard that, although I have not seen written confirmation. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was true.

    2. 100%!

As has been explained on this website, we could — if we had the political will — repatriate all the non-Whites in this country and that would leave more room. In that context a true nationalist government should give nature a chance to thrive within our nation. What justifies an anphro-centric worldview? ANSWER: materialism, the will-to-consume.

True nationalists would stamps that kind of virus out, right?

      1. My feelings exactly Shaun. Nationalism is more than mere materialism, nor is it simply a reaction to Marxism, or as the most deluded of Marxists believe, a defends mechanism of capitalism.
If we are to be a free people, we must shake off entirely all traces of Jewish thought from our understanding of the world around us. The nationalist who wishes to live a comfortable life, where machinery and efficient production ensure a life without hardship or struggle, cannot truly be said to be nationalists.
To me nationalism is an understanding of your own place in the order of the world, of the duty that being a part of your nation requires. Aryan man must be the guardian of the earth, the man that fights for his survival and abides not long in comfort and decadence. A man grown strong by living as a part of nature.
This is the reason I am a strong proponent of the ancient religion, to me Paganism is the only religion that makes sense for a nationalist. The traditions and beliefs of your tribe, tied to nature and to your duty to be an honourable and strong member of your tribe.
We can fight the uphill battle against international finance all we like, but if we do not purge the materialism of the Hebrew from our thought, and we live as kept men, we will have won nothing.

  5. Four people per acre sounds low. I’ve heard that a quarter acre can feed a four person household.

I supply my two-person household with about half of our annual produce needs on roughly 750 square feet of land (that’s slightly more than 1/60th of an acre). Right now that includes potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, onions, beets, broccoli, melons, squash, corn, peppers, radishes, beans, peas, lettuce, spinach, turnip, and cucumbers.

We live in northern Maine, USA, which I venture has a shorter growing season than most of the UK. I’m going to build two greenhouses (that give me about the same amount of growing-space) so that I can double or even triple the length of our growing season. That should enable us to grow the bulk of our produce needs.

Of course, that doesn’t include meat, eggs, and dairy products. I figure a few chickens and a couple of goats should take care of that. I don’t know how much room they’ll take-up.

    1. You are almost certainly right Russell, but you must appreciate that Lord Lauderdale was describing large scale agricultural output in the late 1800s before most modern pesticides and fertilisers had been invented, before tractors/combined harvesters etc., powered by internal combustion engines had been invented and in the days before power tools or indeed a ubiquitous electricity supply through the national grid had been created.
      .
With modern day intensive farming methods and the technology available to us today, it will undoubtedly be possible for the UK to feed our modern population several times over if the political will existed to make such a thing possible. Our modern political leaders however do not want an independent Britain (or France or Germany or USA for that matter), they want all nations to feel that we are incapable of fending for ourselves and must cling together for mutual support – this is the way to world government and corporate global domination.

      1. Right on Max.

It’s time for people to start acting independently. Families should grow their own food and otherwise be as self-reliant as possible. That’s the best way to resist the globalists.

  6. Its good to know that our food security can be established with such straight forward reasoning. Is it possible to organize our energy needs applying the same logic?

    1. I have not examined the energy situation in any detail so far, but I remain confident that we can make ourselves self-sufficient in every respect. It simply requires the political will. If we will it and act with determination, then it shall be so!

  7. You could also add that with a population of roughly 60m including an unwanted immigrant surplus amounting to, perhaps, 6-8m, we actually need even less food than you’ve stated.

  8. And then there is the total of food, people like myself, grow in allotments and our gardens. Back garden output last year Runner beans, 56lbs,onions 37libs, leeks 19lbs, new and second crop potato 37lbs. Cabbages 40+ + marrows, Cucumber. Tomato, Radish, lettuce, Rocket,French beans, spring onions and Sweet Bell Peppers.

Utilised effectively we have far more available productive land than official estimates, and people unable or willing to use their land can always find a willing volunteers to use it for them though schemes like “garden share”.They could always charge a small share of the produce as rent..

Imagine using workfare/volunteers/pensioners etc to utilise all that wasted and under used land around official buildings, hospitals, universities etc ,

Go to St James’s Park in London and you will see a beautifully tended vegetable garden, even amongst all that development food production is possible and new ideas and methods are creating ever more opportunities to improve our self sufficiency even further!
