In a highly meaningful twist of irony, a decision by the Brussels city council to erect a “modern art” Christmas Tree made of glass TV screens has been mistakenly blamed on Muslims objecting to Christmas traditions.
Hysterical articles appeared in many journals and online blogs repeating a story which claimed that the traditional Christmas tree, erected in the centre of Brussels each year, had been cancelled and replaced with a “winter sculpture.”
The reason for the move, it was claimed, was that local Muslims—who now make up nearly 50 percent of Brussel’s population—had objected to the Christian undertones.
Now however it appears that there was never any such objection from the Muslims and that the “sculpture” which caused the stir was merely one more symptom of the degeneracy which now masquerades as “art” in the modern world.
The 25-metre “installation” which will replace Brussel’s Christmas tree will be made from screens that will put on light and sound displays, president of Brussels Tourism Philippe Close said.
“Let’s be clear, there’ll be a Christmas tree and a nativity scene. Christmas traditions will be respected. The theme this year is ‘winter pleasures’ at the huge Christmas market that has a worldwide reputation. We wanted to emphasize culture and modernity, so asked artists to reinvent the Christmas tree, which is actually a pagan symbol,” he explained.
So it’s just a question of appalingly bad tate in “art” rather than Muslims, this time at least. However, one is not too sure which is worse: cultural displacement or cultural degernarcy.
It’s not all bad news though: a petition calling for a real Christmas tree in Brussels’ Grand Place has attracted more than 10,000 signatures, presumably from real Belgians and those who can see through fake “art.”

Maybe the ugly sculpture has a point as most people will be stuck in front of a TV over Christmas or in the shopping malls!

Why is it ugly? For an author of the article i suggest to give better arguments on his opinion about this certain incarnation of modern art. Real christmas tree? Arent a lot of people bored of that stuff? First, the tree dies, then you cut it and place on city square. Second, it’s the same over and over again through the years. Third – if we are evolving as a society, why should we stuck on such a dusty and straightforward things like christmas tree should always be a TREE? Modern interpretation is just more inovative and interactive way to be on traditions but also grow intelectually and culturaly.

The other point is that it should be a tree, because it’s Pagan not Christian but has been subverted into representing consumerism.
